Clitic Climbing in Polish Tense Auxiliary Constructions
نویسنده
چکیده
The aim of this paper is to account for the behaviour of Polish pronom-inal clitics in tense auxiliary constructions. In particular, we discuss the phenomenon known as clitic climbing (CC) and provide its HPSG account. Unlike Romance or Germanic languages, Polish employs only one tense auxiliary verb by´c 'be'. The future tense of imperfective verbs is formed with the strong form of the auxiliary: (4.1) Ty you be dziesz will.be.2sg widzia l seen ten this film. film 'You will see this film.' As argued in [Borsley and Rivero(1994)], past tense, (4.2a), and conditional verbs, (4.2b), are formed with an auxiliary as well: (4.2) a. Ty you widziaa l seen-e´s AUX.2sg ten this film. film 'You saw this film.' b. Ty you widziaa l seen-by´s AUX-COND.2sg ten this film. book 'You would see this film.' Although (e)´ s and by´s in (4.2) look like verbal inflection, they can be detached from the verb and occur on (almost) any other preceding word, 1 (4.3) (see [Booij and Rubach(1987)] or [Spencer(1991), ch.9] for more examples).

Clitic Climbing and Tense Auxiliaries in Polish and Romance
The aim of this paper is to compare the behaviour of Polish and Romance pronominal clitics in tense auxiliary constructions and to account for Polish facts. First, we present the system of Polish auxiliaries, briefly comparing it to Romance. Then, we discuss clitic climbing (CC), the phenomenon well-known in Romance. We contrast Polish CC with CC in Italian and French. Finally, we present a for...
متن کاملClitic Climbing in Polish Verb Clusters: an HPSG Approach
The aim of this paper is to compare clitic climbing (CC) in Polish and Romance and then provide an HPSG account of CC in Polish. We discuss CC in the complementizerless verbal complexes, which we call verb clusters (VC). Both the behaviour of Polish clitics and properties of VC are different in Polish and Romance. Although we apply (‘standard’ for HPSG) lexical encoding to account for CC, our a...
متن کاملA Note on Complex Predicate Formation: Evidence from Auxiliary Selection, Re exivization, and Past Participle Agreement in French and Italian
French and Italian confront us with an interesting puzzle in the analysis of complex predicates. In both languages we nd constructions { involving e.g. causative verbs and so{called restructuring verbs (in Italian 2 ) { for which various authors have motivated an analysis in terms of complex predicate formation. 3 The most compelling criterion in support of this analysis is (object) clitic clim...
متن کاملClitic climbing in Romance: "Restructuring", causatives, and object-control verbs
"Restructuring" in Romance refers to constructions which appear to violate Standard locality constraints, thereby presenting a challenge for syntactic theory. One of the most well-studied cases of restructuring is that of clitic climbing. This is illustrated in the Italian example (la), in which the clitic lo, the apparent object of leggere, appears on the higher verb vuole. As shown in (lb), i...

This paper explores the usage of antepenultimate and penultimate stress in 1st person plural past tense verb forms in Polish. Although Polish generally has penultimate stress, prescriptive grammars treat these verb forms as an exception, assigning antepenultimate stress. It has been argued elsewhere that penultimate stress is possible in these forms, although in colloquial speech. Data from 40 ...
